About St George's Church, Portobello
St George's Church, Portobello, stands in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Formerly an Anglican parish church, it ceased religious use in 1981. The University of Sheffield later purchased the property and, in 1994, transformed it to provide teaching space and accommodation for students. The building has Grade II listed protection.
The foundation was laid in July 1821, with consecration following in June 1825. It was Sheffield’s earliest church funded through the 1818 legislation for new church construction, and the Commission covered its £15,181 cost. Architects Woodhead and Hurst produced a Gothic Revival design influenced by the Perpendicular tradition. Measuring approximately 37 by 20 metres, the structure comprises a nave divided into six bays, a short chancel and a 43-metre tower. Its former galleries increased capacity to 380 worshippers. Peregrine falcons have bred in a roof-mounted nesting box added in 2010.
