About Banner Cross Methodist Church

Banner Cross Methodist Church is a Methodist place of worship at 12 Ecclesall Road South, Sheffield, about four kilometres south-west of the city’s centre. It remains in religious and community use. Grade II protection covers the principal building, the connected schoolroom, the perimeter wall and the entrance piers.

Local Methodists began raising money in 1902 as new housing was planned for the formerly rural district. George Baines and Son designed the first premises, which opened in 1907 and later became the schoolroom. Growth led to a larger sanctuary by Sheffield architect William John Hale, inaugurated in 1929. The later building combines Gothic Revival influences with plain, forceful geometry. Its fabric is mainly dressed, regularly laid stone, with red brick used to accent selected windows. A prominent, solidly proportioned tower is its chief external feature. The earlier structure uses an Arts and Crafts design, textured masonry, brickwork and slate-covered roofs. A hall for lectures replaced a timber building in 1937. During the Second World War, rooms were used as a public library and an emergency rest facility.
