About St Michael and All Angels Church, Great Houghton
St Michael and All Angels Church, Great Houghton, is the Church of England parish church serving Great Houghton, near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. The church is recognised for its historic and architectural importance with Grade II* listed status.
Built around 1650, it began as a private chapel commissioned by Sir Edward Rodes, High Sheriff of Yorkshire and a prominent Parliamentarian. His household and estate tenants worshipped there, while nonconformist ministers also served under the family’s protection. Oliver Cromwell visited after its completion and praised its restrained design. Rodes’s stone coat of arms once stood on the eastern gable, where its former position remains visible. The chapel was authorised for Anglican worship in 1849, joined the Church of England within Darfield parish in 1906, and held its first Anglican service, a celebration of Holy Communion, on 24 November 1908.
