About St Nicholas Parish Church, Lanark
St Nicholas Parish Church, Lanark is a Church of Scotland congregation in the centre of Lanark, South Lanarkshire. It remains a place of worship and is designated a Category B listed building. The church is also associated with Whuppity Scoorie, an annual local tradition centred there. Since the departure of the Reverend Alison Meikle in November 2014, it has had no resident minister.
A chapel occupied the site by the 1200s. Investigations carried out during the 1990s uncovered objects from that century, together with pillars attributed to Thomas Twaddle and dated to 1571. Evidence indicates that worship continued through the later medieval era and beyond the Reformation. A sculpture of William Wallace, created by Robert Forrest during the early nineteenth century, stands over the entrance and measures roughly 2.4 metres in height. Nearby, remains of a well known from records dating to 1662 were discovered in 2004, then examined, drained and infilled.
