About United Reformed Church
United Reformed Church is in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, and belongs to the United Reformed Church in Scotland. The present congregation developed from two Hamilton congregations that joined together in 1966. It worships in the South Park Road building adopted at the time of that union.
The older congregation began in 1807 with support from the Reverend Greville Ewing, initially gathering at Back o’ Barns before moving to Auchingramont Road and becoming St James’ Congregational Church. A theological disagreement led some members to establish another congregation, later based in South Park Road and associated with the Evangelical Union of Scotland. Both congregations entered the same denominational body when Scotland’s Evangelical and Congregational unions combined in 1896. St James’ closed in 1966 and its congregation joined the South Park Road church as Hamilton Congregational Church. The church became part of the United Reformed Church in 2000 and holds memorabilia connected with David Livingstone’s family.
