About Hamilton Old Parish Church
Hamilton Old Parish Church is an active Church of Scotland place of worship on Strathmore Road, serving part of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire. Its Georgian building and surrounding grounds hold Category A listed status.
Constructed from 1729 to 1732, the church succeeded a fifteenth-century collegiate building on a different site near the mausoleum in what is now Strathclyde Park. William Adam created its distinctive, mostly circular plan, and it is believed to be his sole church design. The interior was remodelled in 1926. Features include a memorial commemorating four Covenanters put to death at Edinburgh in 1666, and an 1876 window by Ballantine and Gardiner depicting Christ with Martha and Mary. In the churchyard stands the Netherton Cross, a red sandstone monument from the tenth or eleventh century, transferred from Hamilton Palace in 1926.
