About Kirkoswald Parish Church
Kirkoswald Parish Church is a Church of Scotland parish church in Girvan, South Ayrshire. It remains a place of worship and is protected as a Category A listed building. The congregation is linked with Fisherton Parish Church.
Completed in 1777, the church replaced a medieval building dating from about 1220, whose remains survive in Kirkoswald’s old burial ground. Its design bears the strong influence of Robert Adam, who was then engaged at nearby Culzean Castle, and the building has changed little since its construction. A fire contained within the central heating ducts in 1997 led to the discovery of several forms of rot and fungal damage. Extensive repairs followed, while the interior was reinstated with few alterations. Architectural historians associated with Culzean helped establish a decorative scheme intended to resemble the church’s original colours as closely as possible.
