About Stair Parish Church
Stair Parish Church is a parish church in Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland. It is recognised as a Category C listed building, reflecting its architectural and historic interest.
The parish was established in 1673 after Barnweill parish was dissolved and much of its minister’s stipend reassigned to Stair. Tradition holds that the Earl of Stair supported this change because travelling on horseback from Stair House to Barnweill was inconvenient. Until 1707, Stair’s minister also preached beneath an oak on the Fulton estate to retain entitlement to the Barnweill stipend. The first church, dating from about 1706, was replaced in 1864. That earlier building was plain, with an earth floor and a gable-mounted belfry as its clearest ecclesiastical feature. Inside were three galleries set aside for the lairds of Barskimming, Stair and Drongan. A manse followed in 1807 and was later renamed Glenstang.
