About St Mary the Vrigin
St Mary the Vrigin is a Church of England parish church in West Buckland, near Wellington in Somerset. It serves within the Wellington and District group of parishes, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural significance, the church holds Grade I listed status.
Construction of the current church took place from about 1275 until 1300, replacing an older Norman building. Its layout comprises a short two-bay nave with aisles, a chancel and chapels to the north and south, while a hammerbeam structure supports the roof. The fortified-looking, three-level tower was erected around 1509, with angled buttresses providing support. Its six Whitechapel bells include one dating to 1606. A font carved from Purbeck marble survives from around 1140. An organ and choir gallery added in 1838 was dismantled in 1891.
