About St. James the Great
St. James the Great is an active Church of England parish church at Southstoke in Somerset. It is dedicated to James, the apostle traditionally identified as Zebedee’s son. The parish belongs to the combined benefice covering South Stoke, Combe Down and Monkton Combe, under the Archdeaconry of Bath. The church holds Grade II* listed status.
Originating in the twelfth century, the building was modified in the fifteenth century and restored during the mid-nineteenth century. The chancel and southern aisle were reconstructed in about 1845 and 1850. A Norman doorway survives on the northern side, with lozenge-patterned shafts and elaborate decoration featuring floral forms, zigzags and interwoven designs. The church also has a tower and a many-sided stone pulpit, thought to be Perpendicular in date. Its historic plate has included a chalice from Elizabeth I’s reign and a Thomas Parr paten bearing a 1700 hallmark.
