About Coke Memorial Methodist Church
Coke Memorial Methodist Church stands in South Petherton, Somerset. Formerly a Methodist place of worship, it closed in 2023 after a final service on 1 October. The building has held Grade II listed status since 1988.
Designed by Barnstaple architect Alexander Lauder, the church was constructed in 1881–82 as a successor to a deteriorating Wesleyan chapel dating from 1809. It commemorates Thomas Coke, a former Anglican curate in South Petherton who later became influential in Methodism. Built from Hamstone in the Gothic style, with a Welsh slate roof, it includes a south-east turret and a spire rising roughly 70 feet. Stained glass in the principal window was made by Swaine Bourne of Birmingham. The interior originally seated 320 people on pitch-pine benches, while an organ by Taunton builder F. Minns was installed in 1894.
