About St Aldhelm & St Eadburga
St Aldhelm & St Eadburga is a Church of England church on Broadway Street in Ilminster, Somerset. Dating from the thirteenth century, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its dedication is uncommon, linking the church with St Aldhelm, a scholar, poet, abbot of Malmesbury and bishop of Sherborne, and with St Eadburh of Winchester, a granddaughter of King Alfred.
The church stands apart from the village, a position traditionally attributed to an outbreak of plague. A thirteenth-century cross survives in the churchyard. The dedication to St Eadburga may have been adopted comparatively recently, since an 1848 account recorded a dedication only to St Aldhelm. Inside, the church retains an original wooden funeral bier that was used more than a century ago.
