About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is an Anglican parish church on Main Road in Ilminster, Somerset. It serves within the joint benefice of Ilminster and Whitelackington, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. Recognised for its special architectural and historic interest, it is listed at Grade II*.
Built across the 1300s and 1400s, the church uses Hamstone masonry beneath slate-covered roofs. Its layout comprises a four-bay nave, a chancel divided into two bays and a buttressed western tower with four levels. Inside are a medieval piscina, an elaborately ornamented recess for a figure, and damaged stone effigies of a civilian and an armoured knight. Memorials include Sir George Speke’s Perpendicular Gothic tomb and J. Richards of Exeter’s monument to John Hanning. Charles Eamer Kempe created the east window glass, added in 1896. Marks cut into roof lead depict names, footwear and parts of the body, including one dated 1689.
