About St Bartholomew's
St Bartholomew’s is a Church of England parish church in Cranmore, Somerset, situated on Cooks Lane. Dating from the fifteenth century, it remains part of the benefice centred on St Peter and St Paul in Shepton Mallet, alongside St Aldhelm’s in Doulting. The church is recognised at Grade I for its special architectural and historic importance.
Built around 1450, the church includes a chancel reconstructed in 1848 in a style combining Early English and Perpendicular Gothic elements. Its battlemented tower rises in three stages, with supporting buttresses, pinnacles at the corners, decorative stone tracery and gargoyles. Beneath the tower is a fan-vaulted stone ceiling. Inside are memorials associated with the Strode family and the Chetham family of Southill House, together with a funeral bier made in 1597.
