About Immaculate Conception
Immaculate Conception is a Roman Catholic parish church on Marine Hill in Clevedon, Somerset. Standing near Marine Parade and Wellington Terrace, it looks across the Severn Estuary. The parish remains under the care of Franciscan friars and covers Clevedon as well as Yatton, Wrington, Claverham and Congresbury.
French members of the Franciscan Order established a Catholic mission in Clevedon in 1882, with the earliest Mass celebrated at the former Royal Hotel in February 1883. Alexander Scoles, a priest and architect based in Bridgwater, designed the present church. Its foundation stone was placed in February 1886, and the completed building was consecrated and opened in July 1887. Later changes included a font added in 1929, a replacement altar in 1967 and benches brought from Gorton Monastery in 1990. Greyfriars Hall was constructed beside the church in 2002–03, while a white statue of Mary was placed in the seaward-facing front niche in 2020.
