About St Mary the Virgin
St Mary the Virgin is an active Church of England parish church on Fairend Lane in Chard, Somerset. It forms part of the Blackdown benefice, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells, and holds Grade II* listed status.
Designed by Benjamin Ferrey, the present building replaced an earlier church and took shape between 1853 and 1863. Its stone walls are finished with Hamstone detailing beneath a tiled clay roof. The plan includes a nave of six bays, a chancel, two aisles of four bays each, a southern chapel and a tower strengthened by stepped buttresses. Carved timbers enrich the hammerbeam ceiling, and figures representing Christ’s twelve disciples appear in the nave. The windows include glass by Michael O’Connor, Charles Eamer Kempe, and Clayton and Bell. A chancel monument portrays Madelina Lance holding her baby at the Resurrection. The tower underwent restoration in 1966, while the organ, made by Sweatland of Bath, was repaired in 1972.
