About Church of St Peter, Catcott
The Church of St Peter is a Church of England parish church in Catcott, Somerset. It belongs to the Polden Wheel benefice and is protected at Grade I. Structural concerns affecting the roof and walls have led to its inclusion on the Heritage at Risk Register, although repairs costing more than £100,000 have improved the building’s condition.
Mostly dating from the fifteenth century, with construction recorded in 1401, the church also retains limited work from the thirteenth century. After being condemned as a chantry in 1548, it was acquired and demolished by William Coke in 1552, but legal proceedings later compelled him to reconstruct it. The interior comprises a nave and chancel, while a former chapel on the north side now serves as the vestry. Diagonal buttresses strengthen the west tower, which rises in two stages. Notable fittings include a thirteenth-century font with eight sides and a bell made by Edward Bilbie in 1716.
