About Church of St John the Baptist
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Church of England parish church in Carhampton, Somerset. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and belongs to a benefice covering Dunster, Carhampton and several neighbouring parishes within the Exmoor deanery.
An earlier village church, located east of the current site, was dedicated to St Carannog, a sixth-century Welsh monk. The present church dates principally from the fifteenth century, around 1450, and was designed in the Perpendicular Gothic style. Much of it was reconstructed in 1862 and 1863. Further work between 1868 and 1870 replaced the former low, tile-topped tower and added a vestry. A timber pulpit and painted timber screen, both dating from about 1500, were retained from the previous building, together with several monuments and bells.
