About Church of St Leonard, Butleigh

The Church of St Leonard is an Anglican parish church in Butleigh, Somerset. It belongs to a joint benefice encompassing Butleigh, Baltonsborough, West Bradley and West Pennard, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The building is designated Grade II* for its special historic and architectural importance.

Although today’s stone structure was largely erected during the fourteenth century, worship began here in Anglo-Saxon times, and a doorway may retain material from that earlier building. Glastonbury Abbey held both Butleigh and its place of worship in the Domesday era. In the mid-1800s, John Chessell Buckler restored and enlarged the church for George Neville-Grenville, providing a replacement hammerbeam roof. Noteworthy furnishings include a fifteenth-century font with eight sides and a Jacobean communion table. Lucius Gahagan created the largest memorial, commemorating three naval members of the Hood family and incorporating verse written by Robert Southey. Their family chest tomb lies outside in the burial ground.
