About Church of St Dunstan, Baltonsborough
The Church of St Dunstan is an Anglican parish church at Baltonsborough in Somerset. It holds Grade I listed status and serves within the Brue Benefice, which also encompasses Butleigh, West Bradley and West Pennard. The dedication commemorates Dunstan, a Baltonsborough native born in 909 who rose to become Canterbury’s archbishop and helped reshape Anglo-Saxon monastic life.
Constructed during the fifteenth century, the church contains a spacious nave divided into four bays and a chancel of two bays. The unusual breadth of the nave has strained its roof and pushed the northern wall out of alignment. Its characteristically plain local tower supports a decorative metal weather vane produced by a nearby blacksmith in the 1800s. Notable furnishings include a medieval baptismal font and a screen created to Frederick Bligh Bond’s design. Two military burials lie in the churchyard, commemorating a soldier from the Great War and a naval serviceman from the Second World War.
