About Church of the Holy Cross, Babcary

The Church of the Holy Cross is an Anglican parish church in Babcary, Somerset. It serves within the Six Pilgrims group of parishes, under the Diocese of Bath and Wells, and has Grade II* protection for its architectural and historic importance.

Christian worship on the site may reach back beyond the Norman period, while documentary evidence confirms a church by 1200. The surviving structure largely developed during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Its stone walls carry roofs covered with stone slates, and the plan includes a nave of three bays alongside a northern aisle. A chancel spanning two bays and the aisle were introduced by Benjamin Ferrey during work in 1875 and 1876, followed by another programme of repairs in the 1950s. Corner supports strengthen the tower, which rises through three levels and holds six bells. One was made in 1611, while Thomas Bilbie cast another in 1753. The interior retains a medieval font and an octagonal pulpit from 1632.
