About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is a Church of England church in Market Drayton, Shropshire. Set on a prominent red sandstone outcrop overlooking the River Tern, it is recognised as a Grade II* listed building.
A priest at Drayton was recorded in 1086, and an earlier timber Anglo-Saxon church probably occupied the site. The present stone building originated around 1150, although substantial work followed in the 1320s. Much of the exterior was restored or reconstructed during the late nineteenth century, using mainly dressed red sandstone, with grey stone incorporated into the tower. The Norman arch above the west entrance is the sole surviving element of the first stone church. Notable features include an embattled tower with eight bells, stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe and Shrigley and Hunt, and several memorials to the Corbet family. The organ dates from after 1866, with its pipes now positioned behind the reredos.
