About All Saints
All Saints is an active Church of England parish church in Claverley, Shropshire. It belongs to the Bridgnorth deanery, within the Ludlow archdeaconry and Hereford diocese, and shares a benefice with Holy Innocents at Tuck Hill. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Christian origins at the site may reach back to the seventh century, while the present foundation is attributed to Roger de Montgomerie before his death in 1094. Built of locally sourced red sandstone, the church includes a clerestoried nave, aisles, a three-bay chancel and adjoining chapels. Its south tower was heightened and strengthened with corner buttresses late in the fifteenth century; the upper stages were carefully reconstructed by W. Wood Bethell in 1902. Notable features include Norman arches and fonts, a Jacobean pulpit, medieval wall paintings of armoured knights, saints and apostles, and stained glass from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries. Memorials include the alabaster tomb of Sir Robert Broke and his two wives.
