About Polwarth Church
Polwarth Church occupies elevated ground at Stichill in the Scottish Borders, close to the route linking Greenlaw and Duns. Once part of the Church of Scotland, it ceased parish use in 2004. It has since passed into private ownership and may be used for weddings. Its historic and architectural importance is recognised through Category A protection.
The first firmly recorded place of worship on the site was blessed in 1242 by David de Bernham, then Bishop of St Andrews, in honour of St Kentigern. Following serious deterioration, rebuilding was funded during the late 1300s by John de St Clair. Another extensive reconstruction took place in 1703, incorporating material from earlier structures. The present church has rubble masonry, a roof covered in slate and a T-form layout, with a prominent tower divided into four levels. Major internal work was carried out during the twentieth century. At the eastern wall, a grille allows a view into the Marchmont family burial vault.
