About Ayton Parish Church
Ayton Parish Church is a Church of Scotland parish church serving Ayton and nearby Burnmouth in the Eyemouth area of the Scottish Borders. It stands beside the B6355, close to the A1 and around half a mile south of Ayton village centre. The church remains in use and is protected as a Category A listed building, Scotland’s highest category of historic designation.
Religious use of the site dates back to the medieval period. After King Edgar granted the former lands of Eiton to Coldingham Priory around the turn of the 12th century, its monks established a chapel to St Dionysius later that century. That earlier building hosted Anglo-Scottish diplomatic meetings, including negotiations in 1497 that produced a seven-year truce. It eventually became unsuitable, and the present church was erected beside it in 1864. Designed by James Maitland Wardrop in an Early Gothic style, the building has an almost T-shaped plan and a square tower rising through three stages.
