About St Peter
St Peter is an Anglican parish church in Church Lane, Uppingham, Rutland. Dedicated to the apostle Peter, it continues to serve its parish and has Grade II* protection in recognition of its architectural and historic importance.
The earliest parts of the present structure originate in about 1210. Its two side aisles and portions of the nave’s arched divisions belong to the 1200s, with the tower at the western end added during the following century. Surviving details include a Norman-style entrance, metal fittings from the 1100s and an eight-sided baptismal font. Above the chancel are six timber angels dating from the Middle Ages. A carved seat panel from 1631 was converted into a prayer desk during the 1800s, while woodwork from a 1605 pulpit was reused for shelving. A stone monument commemorating Rowland Durant is mounted in the north aisle. On 29 June, an old custom marks St Peter’s Day by covering the porch and nave floors with hay or rushes.
