About St Nicholas
St Nicholas stands on Lyndon Road in Pilton, Rutland. It serves as the village’s Anglican parish church and remains an active place of worship within the Church of England. The building is recognised for its special architectural and historic interest through its Grade II* designation.
The doorways and internal arches are the oldest surviving fabric. Its plan includes a nave with a southern aisle, a chancel and an entrance porch, while two bells are housed in a bell-cote. The eight-sided font probably originated in the 1200s. A piscina and several windows along the southern aisle are from the following century. In 1852, the chancel was reconstructed while Charles John Ellicott was rector; he subsequently became Gloucester’s bishop. Its medieval-inspired design incorporates three narrow pointed windows at the eastern end, together with two separate lancets. Restoration followed in 1878 under the Louth architect James Fowler, including reconstruction of the porch.
