About St Peter and Paul, Exton
St Peter and Paul, Exton is the Church of England parish church for Exton in Rutland. Set in the grounds of Exton Hall, a short distance from the village, it is a substantial medieval building protected at Grade I. The church is particularly notable for its extensive group of memorials.
The exterior largely belongs to the 13th century, while much of the interior reflects Victorian work. After lightning hit the spire in 1843, severely affecting the nave and gallery, J. L. Pearson carried out rebuilding in 1852 and 1853. A 14th-century font has carved faces at each corner. Memorials range from the medieval tomb of Nicholas Grene to later monuments for the Keilway, Harington and Noel families. Among them is Grinling Gibbons’s marble memorial of 1685 to Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden, his wife Elizabeth Bertie and their 19 children. The collection also includes work by Joseph Nollekens.
