About Saint Catherine's Church
Saint Catherine's Church serves the Anglican community in Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon Taf. It belongs to the Church in Wales and the Diocese of Llandaff, and forms part of a parish uniting Anglican congregations in Pontypridd and Ynysybwl. This active parish church is protected at Grade II* and occupies a prominent hillside site within its graveyard. Its community work includes a food bank, debt guidance and a café.
John Norton designed the building for a town whose population had increased substantially through nineteenth-century industrial growth. Finished in 1870, it was based partly on his earlier work at Neath, with George Edmund Street’s Pimlico church informing aspects of the interior. Another aisle was constructed in 1885, followed by clock dials during the 1890 restoration. Later work brought a northern vestry in 1915 and changes to the chancel by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1919. The stained glass includes five north aisle windows from 1901–12 and a 1923 window commemorating the First World War.
