About Hermon Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel
Hermon Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel stands on Railway Terrace in Penrhiwceiber, within Mountain Ash, Rhondda Cynon Taf. The chapel belonged to the Calvinistic Methodist tradition and held its worship in Welsh. It is recognised as a National Monument of Wales.
Work on the chapel was marked by a foundation ceremony on 10 December 1894, and construction required an expenditure of £4,000. With room for 800 people, it was among the Aberdare Valley’s more substantial places of worship. Its congregation numbered 326 in 1896, declining to 186 by 1931 and falling sharply during and after the 1960s. D. Ben Rees was its minister in that decade. While serving locally, he researched the history of Nonconformity across the valley, later developing this work into the 1975 book *Chapels in the Valley*.
