About Bethesda Baptist Chapel
Bethesda Baptist Chapel is a Welsh Baptist church in Fernhill, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Welsh-language services continue to take place, and the chapel remains one of the area’s few surviving Welsh Baptist churches. It is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The congregation began in 1854, when members of Gwawr Chapel in Aberaman organised local prayer gatherings. Two Jenkin Street houses were adapted for worship in 1856, and the church was formally constituted four years later with 39 members. The present chapel was built in 1864 to accommodate 600 people. Designed in a Classical style, it has two levels and an entrance in the gable end, with a hall, Sunday school and vestry to the rear. Extensive renovations took place in 1938 and 1950. Its listing recognises the Classical frontage, well-preserved interior and fittings, and distinctive panelled ceiling.
