About Tabernacle, Aberdare
Tabernacle, Aberdare was a Congregational chapel in Station Street, Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Worship was conducted in English. The chapel ceased operating in 1970, after which its contents passed to other local congregations. Shops belonging to Tesco and Wilkinsons later occupied the ground. The church has National Monument of Wales status.
The congregation originated in 1841, when gatherings took place at the New Inn in a room known as the Long Room. People connected with Siloa and Saron helped establish it for newcomers who could not follow Welsh-language worship. A 450-seat chapel, planned by Merthyr Tydfil architect B. Owen, was completed in 1856 for £823. Demand quickly exceeded its capacity, so another building followed within three years. Designed by W. S. Rampling and erected by W. Rees for £800, the replacement was chiefly Gothic in style. Membership reached its highest recorded level of roughly 200 in 1923.
