About Soar Wesleyan Methodist Chapel

Soar Wesleyan Methodist Chapel is a former Methodist place of worship on Station Road, Hirwaun, in the Aberdare area of Rhondda Cynon Taf. It is designated as a National Monument of Wales. Worship ended there in 1977, after which the congregation joined the English Wesleyan chapel elsewhere in Hirwaun.

The church traces its origins to 1805, when gatherings took place in a barn during the working years of Hirwaun’s iron industry. A purpose-built chapel followed in 1824. Thirteen years later, it was adapted as housing, providing rental revenue for church support, and a larger chapel was erected for £550 to accommodate 260 worshippers. David Davis, a local grocer who ran the London Warehouse and later became an important colliery proprietor, helped bring the project about. A further rebuilding was completed in 1886, with the opening conducted by his grandson, Frederick Lewis Davis.
