About Soar Welsh Baptist Chapel

Soar Welsh Baptist Chapel stands at Kingsbury Place in Llwydcoed, Aberdare, within Rhondda Cynon Taf. This Welsh-language Baptist chapel is recognised as a National Monument of Wales. It is no longer active, having closed during the early 1980s.

The congregation began as an offshoot of the nearby Heolyfelin Baptist chapel, with its earliest meetings taking place in local homes. A purpose-built chapel opened in 1859 and could accommodate 380 worshippers. Thomas Price and Benjamin Evans preached during the opening, and Evans initially served both Soar and Heolyfelin. Daniel Jones became its first dedicated minister in 1876. A vestry costing £300 was added in 1892, while further alterations, including work on another vestry, were undertaken after Vaughan Pugh arrived in 1917. Lizzie Anne Rowlands was later chosen as the chapel’s first female deacon. D. Meredith Morgan was its final minister.
