About Siloa Welsh Independent Chapel
Siloa Welsh Independent Chapel stands in Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf. This Grade II listed former place of worship served a Welsh-speaking Congregationalist community from its establishment in 1844 until 2020. It became the largest chapel in Aberdare belonging to the Welsh Independent tradition and continued hosting worship in Welsh into the twenty-first century.
Its congregation grew from a group connected with Ebenezer at Trecynon, whose members gathered in Welsh at the Boot Inn before forming a separate church. David Price was central to the project and helped create the first chapel, which cost £600. As Aberdare’s coal industry expanded, newcomers from rural parts of west and mid Wales helped membership rise beyond 600 by the 1860s. Revivals in 1849 and 1859 also increased attendance. The chapel underwent rebuilding and enlargement in 1855 for £719, while substantial alterations completed in 1890 cost £1,100. Members later helped establish several other congregations nearby.
