About Ramoth Welsh Baptist Chapel

Ramoth Welsh Baptist Chapel stands in Davies Row, Hirwaun, near Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Founded as a Welsh-language Baptist congregation, it is recognised as a National Monument of Wales. Baptist worship ended there in 1982, but the restored premises returned to Christian use during the 1990s and now accommodate an Assemblies of God fellowship.

Gatherings began in the early nineteenth century at a house belonging to George Overton of Hirwaun Ironworks. After an interruption, the congregation was revived in 1818, and its first chapel was completed in 1825. Growing membership led to replacement premises, inaugurated in 1843. The structure seen today is the third building on the site and was renovated after the Baptist congregation closed. Among its notable historic features is an organ installed in 1913, funded by Andrew Carnegie. A wax-cylinder recording of the Reverend E. Roberts was also made here during the 1905 Welsh Revival.
