About Horeb Welsh Independent Chapel
Horeb Welsh Independent Chapel is a Congregationalist place of worship in Llwydcoed, Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Recognised as a National Monument of Wales, the church remained in use during the twenty-first century, when a small group continued to gather in its vestry.
The congregation was established in 1859 by worshippers who had belonged to Ebenezer in Trecynon. Earlier meetings in Llwydcoed led to the construction of a schoolroom, also used for British School education. The chapel cost £800 to build and accommodated 350 people; the former schoolroom later became a vestry behind it. Its first minister, Abraham Matthews, served Horeb and Cwmdare before leaving in 1865 to help lead the Welsh settlement in Patagonia. William Samlet Williams ministered from 1871 to 1923 and is commemorated by a white marble plaque inside the chapel.
