About Hen Dy Cwrdd Unitarian Chapel
Hen Dy Cwrdd Unitarian Chapel stands in Trecynon, Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf. This Grade II listed former chapel held worship in Welsh until its closure in 1994. Members then joined Highland Place Chapel elsewhere in Aberdare, allowing the Unitarian community to continue. The Welsh Religious Buildings Trust took ownership of the property in 2005 and began work towards its conservation.
The congregation originated in 1751, when people from Cwm-y-glo established a new meeting house on leased ground. Apart from St John’s Church, it became the earliest surviving worship site in the parish and was already present before industrialisation transformed the area. Its first home looked much like a plain dwelling or public house, reached partly by an exterior stairway, and accommodated about 50 to 100 worshippers. In 1861 this structure was cleared for a considerably larger replacement. Though restrained in design, the new building followed the familiar pattern of Welsh Nonconformist chapels from that century.
