About Elim, Cwmdare
Elim, Cwmdare is a former Independent Congregationalist place of worship at Cwmdare, within Aberdare in Rhondda Cynon Taf. It is recognised as a National Monument of Wales. The church ceased operating in 1998, following almost 140 years of congregational life.
Its origins lie in the revival of 1859. Fifty worshippers left Ebenezer at Trecynon to create a congregation for the growing mining community. They first gathered in a vestry, and a dedicated chapel welcomed worshippers from August 1867. The congregation, whose members were all labourers, contributed £200 to the building fund, while Ebenezer also provided substantial help. Abraham Matthews became the earliest minister, followed in 1869 by David Griffiths, who served until dying in 1906. A replacement chapel was completed in 1903. Rees Llewellyn of Bwllfa House and J. W. Evans from Hirwaun had placed commemorative stones for this rebuilding in August 1902.
