About Tabernacle, Ynysybwl
Tabernacle, Ynysybwl is a former chapel in Abercynon, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, associated with the Methodist Churches. The building is recognised as a National Monument of Wales. Its congregation had fallen to about 20 members by the early twenty-first century, and the church closed in 2021. It was subsequently offered for sale at £70,000.
The congregation originated in 1885, after young local residents explained that they were Welsh Independents rather than Methodists and would attend a chapel belonging to their own tradition if one were founded. Worship initially took place in an upstairs room at the Windsor Hotel. The chapel’s formal opening services followed on 11 and 12 September 1887.
