About Tabernacle, Abercynon
Tabernacle, Abercynon was a Welsh-language Calvinistic Methodist place of worship on Edward Street in Abercynon, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Associated with the Presbyterian tradition and recorded as a National Monument of Wales, the church closed in 1991. Its chapel and vestry were demolished two years later.
The congregation began in 1892, gathering in local homes and the Junction stables. A building erected in 1893 later served as the vestry and Sunday school. Rapid growth led to the construction of a larger chapel in 1898, with room for 550 worshippers. Membership reached 300 during the religious revival of 1904–05. A further vestry at Glancynon Terrace opened around 1912 for a branch Sunday school and weekday meetings serving members across the River Cynon. Subsidence affected the chapel for many years.
