About Jerusalem Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel

Jerusalem Welsh Calvinistic Methodist Chapel is a Methodist place of worship in Abercynon, Rhondda Cynon Taf. Its services were held through the medium of Welsh. The chapel ceased operating in 1976, after which the congregation united with Noddfa Baptist Church. The building is designated a National Monument of Wales.

Its origins lie in 1885, when local miners gathered for worship in a private home. Three years later, William and Edward Williams, farmers from Cribinddu, financed and constructed the chapel. Both men subsequently served as deacons, while the Revd D. Jones took up the role of inaugural minister. Jerusalem also provided a setting for community culture. An eisteddfod held there in 1889 helped bring the youthful poet J. J. Williams wider recognition. Records show a congregation of 270 in 1938. Among its later ministers was Randall Jones, whose earlier occupation had been mining.
