About St Mirin's RC Cathedral
St Mirin’s RC Cathedral stands on Incle Street in Paisley, at the meeting of Glasgow Road. It serves as the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paisley and houses the bishop’s seat, while also supporting an active parish. The cathedral is the diocese’s largest church, with space for about 1,300 worshippers, and is protected as a Category B listed building.
Completed in 1931, the present church was built near its 1808 predecessor and formally opened the following year. It became a cathedral in 1948, shortly after the Diocese of Paisley was established. Thomas Baird designed the building in a Neo-Romanesque manner, using a restrained sandstone exterior, broad interior arches and Italian marble in the chancel. Notable details include an intricately carved sandstone pulpit, Kenneth King’s Art Deco ceramic Stations of the Cross, and apse windows showing angels with biblical emblems. Alterations to the entrance and frontage were finished in 2010.
