About St Matthew's Church, Paisley
St Matthew's Church is a Category A listed place of worship on Gordon Street in Paisley, Renfrewshire. Since 1988 it has housed a Church of the Nazarene congregation, joined at that time by 28 members of the former congregation.
Work took place from 1905 until 1907, when the building opened as St George’s East Free Church. Following Scottish church union in 1929, it entered the Church of Scotland and later received its present name. Paisley architect William Daniel McLennan created an Art Nouveau design influenced by Perpendicular Gothic, together with the fittings, boundary railings and signboard. The interior has a spacious nave with galleries along one side and across the back. Notable details include the functioning organ, a pulpit crowned by a carved wooden wreath of thorns, and recurring tulip forms across the masonry, timber, glazing and metalwork. Robert Anning Bell designed the substantial west window as a First World War memorial.
