About Paisley Abbey

Paisley Abbey is an active Church of Scotland parish church in central Paisley, Renfrewshire. Standing beside the White Cart Water, it serves a Presbyterian congregation and is protected as a Category A listed building.

A Cluniac priory was established here in 1163 by Walter fitz Alan, with monks arriving from Much Wenlock. It became an abbey in 1245 and was rebuilt during the later 1300s after being burned by Edward I in 1307. The Gothic structure incorporates work from the 14th century and extensive reconstruction undertaken between 1858 and 1928, including the north porch and eastern choir. Inside are the 10th-century Barochan Cross, a carved stone frieze illustrating episodes from the life of Saint Mirin, and the Wallace Memorial Window depicting Samson. The abbey also contains burials associated with the High Stewards of Scotland and Marjorie Bruce, mother of Robert II.
