About Laigh Kirk
Laigh Kirk in Paisley, Renfrewshire, was a Church of Scotland congregation and the burgh’s first parish church. Its former Causeyside Street home is a Category B listed building and remains a place of worship for Stow Brae Kirk, formed when the congregation united with Castlehead Church in January 2011.
Established in 1738 as Paisley’s population increased, the church initially met in New Street. Further growth led to a move in 1820 to a larger church on George Street. A related congregation founded on Neilston Road later joined the Free Church following the 1843 Disruption. The separated congregations reunited in 1985, restoring the Laigh Kirk name and worshipping in the Causeyside Street building originally erected for the Free South Church. The first New Street church later became Paisley Arts Centre, while the George Street building was converted into flats with its exterior preserved.
