St Melangell is a Church in Wales place of worship near Oswestry in Powys, set in the Tanat Valley at Pennant Melangell. It remains a destination for pilgrims and holds a service each Sunday at 3.00 pm. The building is protected at Grade I.
The religious foundation probably began in the late eighth century, honouring Melangell, remembered as a hermit and abbess associated with a sanctuary and convent here. Although the present structure is chiefly twelfth-century, its earliest known written record is from the thirteenth century. Built from several kinds of stone, the church has one nave, a square tower and an eastern apse containing Melangell’s traditional burial place. Its Romanesque shrine was assembled again from surviving pieces in 1958, then restored in the early 1990s. Other notable features include a fifteenth-century rood screen illustrating Melangell’s story and two effigies from the fourteenth century. Substantial restoration took place during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
