About St Llwchaiarn's Church

St Llwchaiarn's Church is a Church of England church in Llanllwchaiarn, within the Newtown with Llanllwchaiarn community in Powys and the historic county of Montgomeryshire. Standing above the River Severn, north-east of Newtown, it is protected as a Grade II listed building. Its dedication is to Llwchaiarn, a Welsh saint traditionally associated with the sixth century.

The early dedication and the raised, nearly circular original churchyard suggest a foundation in the sixth or seventh century. The current building replaced an earlier church in 1815 and was constructed in brick in a restrained Georgian style, with a square tower. A chancel and vestry were added in the 1860s, while restoration introduced bench seating, a yellow sandstone chancel arch and Gothic-style windows. Its stained glass includes work by Morris & Co. In 2011, a richly carved and coloured medieval screen dating from around 1500 was installed here after previously standing in churches in Newtown.
