About St Beuno's Church

St Beuno’s Church is an Anglican church in Betws Cedewain, Powys, in the historic area of Montgomeryshire. It occupies raised ground above the village, close to the valley formed by the Bechan Brook, and is surrounded by a roughly oval burial ground. The building is designated Grade II* for its architectural and historic importance.

Tradition links its foundation to St Beuno at around AD 600, while the churchyard’s form may reflect an early medieval religious community. The interior is arranged as one continuous space, with a tower at the west end. Its oldest masonry possibly dates from the early thirteenth century and includes a doorway showing the transition from Romanesque design. Before 1531, the vicar John ap Meredyth added a timber bell stage; his commemorative brass survives inside. William Eden Nesfield directed substantial work in 1868, renewing the nave and the tower above its lower stages. Other features include a seven-sided font, a Perpendicular west window of three lights and George Gilbert Scott’s stone pulpit, transferred from Hawarden.
