About St Serf's Inch Priory

St Serf’s Inch Priory is a historic monastic site on an island in Loch Leven, near Scotlandwell in Perth and Kinross. Also known as Portmoak Priory, it is protected as a scheduled monument. The surviving remains have also served as a fishing shelter or bothy.

A church dedicated here in 838 places the site among Scotland’s earliest Christian foundations. A Culdee community occupied it before David I established an Augustinian house associated with St Andrews in 1150. Excavations uncovered a 12th-century church with substantial walls, arches at both ends, a rectangular chancel and a possible western tower or nave. Archaeologists also found burials, traces of a much larger building and extensive oval enclosures around the chapel. Other discoveries include medieval pottery, metal objects, a possible crucible, a flint arrowhead and evidence suggesting a fish pond. The chronicler Andrew de Wyntoun was the priory’s best-known prior.
